Abstract
A description is given of 64-kb/s video coding equipment based on adaptive gain/shape vector quantization for video conferencing and videophone communications. Motion compensation with some background prediction is used to reduce the interframe prediction error. Effectiveness of motion compensation and hardware size are usually traded off. Here search points of the motion vector are restricted to a limited number to decrease hardware size. Adaptive gain/shape vector quantization is applied to the motion-compensated interframe difference signal after conditional replenishment is decided. The coding efficiency of vector quantization is improved through the use of adaptive control of the codebook size in shape vector quantizer.
