Abstract

Parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel conversion techniques have an enormous potential for optical packet processing in a high-capacity photonic packet-switched network. However, this scheme requires a larger number of EAMs in proportion to the increase of multiplexing number. This paper proposes a novel photonic parallel-to-serial conversion scheme that combines electrical multiplexing with optical multiplexing, and can generate a burst optical packet from CMOS output data. In addition, 40-Gbit/s 16-bit optical packet generation from 16-ch parallel electrical data streams was demonstrated.
