Abstract
We propose a method of dimensioning a virtual path connection (VPCs) in an ATM network, by using self-sizing techniques. The method designs sufficient VPC bandwidth for multimedia traffic to satisfy the required quality of services. Its main features are a measurement-driven algorithm on traffic and quality data, a simple design formula without any assumptions about traffic characteristics, and error recovery by cyclic repetition of its first two steps. This method enables us to allocate bandwidth to VPCs directly according to traffic demands, use network resources efficiently, and introduce various services smoothly.
