Abstract

This paper concerns a numerical study of a nonlinear problem in the theory of elastic membranes. More specifically, we examine the large transverse deflection of an initially planar and annular membrane which deforms transversely under the action of a transverse load imparted to it along the inner circle which bounds it. One may think of the region within the inner circle as the site of a rigid inclusion to which the load is applied. The membrane is composed of an elastic material of the Mooney-Rivlin type, a class of isotropic and incompressible materials characterized by two moduli.
