Abstract

With the recent rapid growth of the Internet, there has arisen demand for real-time voice communication, i.e., Internet Telephony. However, the Internet is not suitable for real-time communication, because it does not guarantee bitrate or routing. This paper describes the technical problems of real-time communication on the Internet and describes NTT's Internet Telephony Software `VocaLink-Soft'. It also describes directory server software `Vocalink-DSV', which enables users to use `VocaLink-Soft' even if they do not know the destination PC's IP address.
