Abstract

A modified fiber bundle model is proposed by introducing random displacement of fibers, which can be regarded as a simple model of random fibrous materials. All fibers in this model have the same equilibrium length l0 as a controlling parameter. The model includes randomness through configuration of the fibers. This point is different from the standard fiber bundle model, where randomness enters through the strength threshold of fibers. We find that the modified model exhibits two different power laws for the frequency distribution of avalanche size, depending on l0. Characteristic behaviors of the modified model are discussed.
