Abstract
The multidisciplinary character of battery science and engineering is discussed. The batteries are the key to the introduction of large fleets of hybrid electric vehicles, which are crucial to helping industrialized societies, to deal with the inevitable depletion of fossil-derived fuels and their adverse enviornmental impact. Lithium-ion batteries are expected to eventually replace Ni-MH hydride batteries in hybrid electric vehicles and power tools. The key to the mission of the ECS Battery Division is to provide a venue for scientists and technologists of all disciplines to assess progress of maturing technologies as well as to promote the new revolution.
