Abstract
Chemical modification of niobium pentaethoxide (Nb(OCH2CH 3)5; Nb(OEt)5) with catechol (C 6H4OH)2; H2cat) was investigated using infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, compositional analysis and mass spectrometry. Niobium pentaethoxide was chemically modified with catechol by the formation of catecholate groups (cat2-) bound to niobium, and a corresponding release of ethanol was observed. The obtained product was [(cat)Nb(OEt) 3]n, which included the dimmer [(cat)Nb(OEt) 3]2.
