note = "Funding Information: So although these classes are still a work-in-progress and I have no reassurance that they will be picked up as a regular part of the curriculum of any of the schools where I teach, at the very least I am now able to demonstrate that there is considerable interest in this Pacific History and related subjects. I am also happy to announce that my colleagues and I were awarded a grant from the Toyota Foundation to undertake joint research on a new initiative I proposed, entitled, {\textquoteleft}Transoceania: Pacific perspectives on empire, war, and globalization between the islands of Micronesia and Japan{\textquoteright}. This project aims to spark dialogue between small communities in island Japan and former Pacific Island colonies, in the hopes of establishing a more permanent programme and a Pacific Islands Studies teaching initiative in Japan.",
