Abstract

The equilibrium grain boundary segregation of phosphorus between 550 degree C and 750 degree C in an Fe-0. 05wt. %P alloy was measured by AES. The amount of segregated phosphorus varied from grain facet to grain facet to a substantial degree, depending on the aging temperature. With increasing temperature, the maximum amount of the segregated phosphorus decreased and the variation among grain boundary facets was reduced. The variation of the segregation was analyzed in terms of crystallographic orientation of each grain boundary facet and the grain boundary misorientation with the aid of ECP. As a result, the amount of segregated phosphorus was found to increase with the tilt angle of the grain boundary misorientation. The measurements on both facing grain boundary facets indicated that segregated phosphorus atoms were divided fairly evenly by fracture on the two grain boundary facets.
