Abstract

We numerically investigated a digitally tunable laser with a chirped ladder Alter and a ring resonator with the aim of achieving a wide wavelength-tuning region covering C-band, by clarifying the relation between the gain spectra and the characteristics of the ladder filter. Experimental results are well explained by the numerical simulation model based on multimode rate equations. Introducing a chirped structure into ladder-type Alter is effective in achieving both wide tunability and stable lasing mode. It is shown that a tuning range of over 40 nm can be achieved by introducing a chirped ladder filter.
