Abstract

In this paper, we discuss how we should decide the electrical constants of permanent magnet synchronous motors for railway vehicle traction, which gives less PM flux to avoid the undesirable regenerative brake caused by back E.M.F of PM field at the higher speed range, and sufficient reluctance torque to achieve the required performance simultaneously. We also examined the suggested design method by applying some assumed design works, and confirmed that it is effective enough to obtain the appropriated constants to satisfy the required train's performance. This study will promote application of the PMSMs for the railway vehicle traction.
