Abstract
As a step toward development of a completely implantable totally artificial heart (TAH) system, a motor driven TAH has been designed and fabricated. It consists of a DC brushless motor and a cylindrical cam assembly sandwiched between a pair of pusher-plate type blood pumps (stroke volume 63 cm**3). The unique aspect of this system is that left and right pumps can be ejected simultaneously like natural hearts as triggered by the filling of either pump. The current system is cylindrical in shape with a 9-cm diameter and 8-cm height, and its overall weight is about 900 g. The in vitro evaluation showed that the maximum pump flow is 6-7 L/min against the afterload of 100 mm Hg with system efficiency of 10-13%.
