Abstract

The development of talking robot WT-1R (Waseda Talker - No. 1 refined) for vowels and consonant sounds was discussed. The robot has 1-DOF(degree of freedom) lungs, 2-DOF vocal cords, 6-DOF tongue, 4-DOF lips, 1-DOF teeth, nasal cavity and 1-DPF soft palate. It produced natural and Japanese vowels (/a/, /i/, /u/, /e/, /o/) and consonant sounds (/s/, /h/, /m/, /p/) like humans.
