Droplet-box: A platform for biological-nanopore-based logical operation using lipid-coated droplet network

Abstract

This paper proposes a system of biological-nanopore-based logic gates using a lipid-coated droplet network that is set up mechanically. The droplet network can be allowed to behave as various logic gates by simply changing the arrangement. A box that has open windows in each lateral face contains an aqueous droplet with a lipid monolayer in organic solvent, which we term as Droplet-Box (DB). The DBs can be manually handled and when they are contacted, a Droplet Interface Bilayer (DIB) is formed at the interface. In this study, we consider the DBs as electronic parts and construct logic gates using the DB network, where an a-Hemolysin (aHL) channel current corresponds to switch-ON. We successfully demonstrated AND, OR, and NOT using the DB network.
