The human visual system acquires information by frequently shifting its gaze. However, it is not clear to what extent the visual system gathers valid information at each point of gaze while the observer is engaging in dynamic visual-motor tasks, including driving. In this study, we investigated the effective visual field by superimposing a gaze-contingent window in real time while simulating a driving situa-tion. Our results showed that drivers detect cars and pedestrians by using a relatively wide visual field (over 40 degrees). However, the ef-fective visual field used for safe driving (e.g., maintaining speed) was restricted to within 20 to 30 degrees.
