Abstract

An electron energy analyzer having a single retarding field has been experimentally studied using a source of monoenergetic electrons, and the line profiles have been measured as functions of the source position and aperture radii. The focusing but multipeaking properties observed are quantitatively in good agreement with the theoretical estimation. In order to get the monopeaking characteristic, a spectrometer having two unbalanced retarding potentials has been designed and examined. The results again support the theoretical prediction. Satisfactory performances in electron-atom and ion-atom collision experiments have been obtained.
