Abstract

We have studied the electronic structure of the spinel-type V oxides LiV2 O4, ZnV2 O4, and CdV2 O4 using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The p - d charge-transfer energy was estimated from the valence-band spectra and the exchange interaction due to d - d transfer Tσ was found to be larger than that due to p - d transfer Tπ in these systems, consistent with the existing theoretical models. Based on the V 2p core-level spectra, we discuss the oxidation state of V ions in the surface region. Interestingly, only in ZnV2 O4 does the oxidation state of V ions strongly depend on the procedure of sample preparation.
