Abstract

The crystallographic aspects of zinc and zinc-nickel alloy electrodeposits on steel sheets have been studied. The zinc electrodeposits grow epitaxially even under current densities as high as 2.0 × 10 4 A/m 2. The zinc-nickel alloy deposits also show epitaxial growth, and epitaxy for γ ZnNi/ α-Fe is favored at low current densities such as 1.0 × 10 3 A/m 2. TEM observation shows that the epitaxial orientation relationship between the deposits and the substrate is (00.1) η // (110) α and [11.0] η // [1̄11] α, and that the relationship between the γ ZnNi and the substrate is a cube-cube relationship. The epitaxial nucleation and growth result in the epitaxial texturization of the deposits.
