Abstract
The devices which are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) include many kinds of precious and minor rare metals. The past research works in our laboratory showed that it was possible to concentrate these metals from wasted cellular phones and PCBs by combining novel comminution and conventional physical separation methods. In this paper, we have analyzed more in detail our past results of comminution and physical separation behaviors for the products comminuted with various crushers and crushing conditions. Through this analysis, detailed characteristics of the crushers were investigated and the major concentration stage(s) (screening, physical separation such as low/high magnetic separation, electrostatic / eddy current separation) of metals were determined in the flowchart by using three kinds of indices. It has been found that the components, Ta, Pd, and W, which were involved in a few specific devices, could be concentrated with relative ease in the physical separation stages for the products comminuted with "separation type" crushers and that the other components, which were distributed in lots of devices, showed a good concentration performance for the products with "semi-distraction type" crushers because of their higher liberation.
