Abstract

Statistical fatigue properties of metals are given an ever-bigger importance when designing machinery and structures for greater reliability. A new method is proposed here for establishing the so-called P-S-N diagrams by using a limited number of test pieces. Application of the method to determine the heat-to-heat variation in carbon and Cr-Mo low-alloy steels is described, and the results obtained in evaluating the statistical fatigue properties of these steels are discussed.
