Abstract
The object of this study is to gain more detailed information concerning the conditions involved in the heat treatment necessary to obtain enhanced electrocatalytic activity. The results provide strong evidence that both the thermally treated macrocycle and the cobalt, either initially bound to the macrocycle or otherwise added, are important for high O//2 reduction activity. This conclusion is at variance with the view of I. Iliev et al. and of G. Gruenig et al. , which is that the metal is not required for electrocatalytic activity.
