Abstract
NTT Laboratories has been conducting research collaboration named AccessNova (which means new access) with the University of Chile since 1994. Over the past six years, NTT has hosted visiting professors and research trainees from the University of Chile while sending researchers to the University of Chile on a short-time-stay basis. NTT and the University of Chile have also conducted experiments and demonstrations using telecommunications networks built between Japan and Chile. Experimental data have been obtained and the effectiveness of the real-time communications between these two most distant countries has been proven. In recent years, research organizations other than NTT and the University of Chile have joined AccessNova activities. This has led to an extension of the collaboration from a bilateral relationship between NTT and the University of Chile to a broader research collaboration framework between Asia and South America. This paper reports the past activities focusing on experiments using telecommunications networks and presents the future prospects of AccessNova.
