Abstract

The influence of buffer layers on magnetic properties and structures of FePt (001) films, sputter deposited on MgO at reduced temperature was investigated. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used for the structural characterization of the films. Obtaining the L10 ordered structure with large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was found to be possible for the FePt films with and without buffer layers. Without a buffer layer, The degree of long-range order and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy was found to increase with increasing lattice mismatch.
