Abstract

The disordering of FePt particles capped with amorphous Al 2O3 was discussed. FePt films were prepared by cosputtering high-purity Fe and Pt targets on heated MgO(001) single crystal substrates using a multiple dc-sputtering system. It was found that interfacial disordering is driven by the strain at the interface and does not progress when the capped layer is deposited at elevated temperature. The results show that FePt particulate film becomes magnetized more easily by Al2O 3 capping.
