Abstract

This paper investigates the role invective toponyms play in the construction of space in right wing discourses in Germany. By analysing non-conventional place names the study identifies dominant patterns in place references as well as alternative reconfigurations of convential spaces. Based on a morphological analysis of the toponyms it also identifies 17 recurrent argumentative patterns which shape the invective forces of place names. These findings are discussed in the context of critical toponymy and invectivity theory. The empirical basis of the study is a collection of 3700 toponyms extracted from a corpus of 29 right-wing online media with 290 million words.
