Abstract
The atomic structures of the LaB6 and SmB6 (001) surfaces have been studied by angleresolved XPS, LEED and ISS. The outermost layer of the LaB6 (001) surface is a lanthanum layer in a 1 × 1 ordered state, while there is not so much samarium on the SmB6 (001) surface. The concentration ratio of Sm3+ ions to Sm2+ ions in the vicinity of the SmB6 (001) surface is much higher than that in bulk.
