    Abstract

    Worm gears offer large reduction ratios and low noise for their load capacities. However owing to manufacturing errors and bending deflections under load, a worm and a wheel do not operate in their theoretical load distribution in meshing. The consequences of poor load distribution influence lubrication and reduce gear life. To obtain actual load distribution on the tooth surface, it is important to know the deflection characteristics of the tooth. To this end, we employed laser holographic interferometry. This method is very useful because it allows us to obtain complete surface information in a short time without making contact with the surface. Based on the experimental results, the empirical formula of tooth deflections was derived. The calculated results using this formula showed fairly good agreement with the experimental results.
