Microscopic surface phonons of MgO(1 0 0) surface

By using electron energy loss spectroscopy, microscopic surface phonons of vacuum-cleaved MgO(1 0 0) surface have been measured. The observed energy-dispersion curves have agreed with the calculated ones based on a shell model.
