Abstract

It is important to estimate precisely the mode-coupling effect caused by the axial fluctuation distribution of modal birefringence (FDMB) in polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs), because system performance depends on the extinction ratio which is affected by FDMB. The authors present an easy interferometric technique for measuring FDMB with a short resolvable length, and they discuss the measured FDMB and the extinction ratio obtained from the FDMB.
