Abstract
We have developed a multimedia distance learning platform based on InterSpace that provides various types of teaching materials. Teachers can construct linked contents between two-dimensional information in a textbook and three-dimensional information for experimental observation. The display part for two-dimensional information functions both as a web browser and as a shared drawing board. In the display part for three-dimensional information, users can shape the simulated movement of virtual objects and also understand each other's behavior as avatars. We presented the system at SIGGRAPH98 and demonstrated a virtual classroom between students, a teacher and NASA researchers acting as lecturers, and got favorable comments.
