Abstract

A new upwind-type finite element scheme is proposed for convection-diffusion problems in irrotational flows. It is derived from a minimization problem in a function space weighted by an exponential function. This scheme preserves the positivity of solutions and is regarded as a natural extension of Il'in's scheme to higher dimensional problems. Some numerical results are also shown.
