Abstract
The definition of power system stability may be extended with a gradual change in the nature of system structure and load and surroundings such as interaction of control schemes, introduction of new control scheme, etc. This paper presents a new approach of assessing power system stability based on the parametric resonance theory. The analogy is confirmed between a simple pendulum and a one-machine-to-quasi-infinite-bus system from the viewpoint of the Mathieu equation. The existence of major critical frequencies of parametric resonance is recognized by means of simulation for (i) a simple generator model, (ii) two-reaction theory model with and without AVR and (iii) a simple network model (Ward & Hale 6-bus system).
