    Abstract

In this chapter the dynamic response of structures subjected to certain prescribed loadings and ground motions is treated and two general methods of optimum design are presented. These methods can be applied to any type of problem after discretizing the object structural systems by, for example, the finite element method. Emphasis is placed on the derivation of the gradients of response quantities (displacement, velocity, stress, and strain) with respect to the design variables. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed methods are also examined by several numerical examples.
