Abstract

Research at Case on electrocatalysts for O//2 reduction in alkaline solutions for Al/air cells has focused on heat-treated transition metal-macrocycles and related materials. They have been shown to have high activity (comparable to that of platinum) and relatively long life under cycling conditions. Through a basic understanding of both the O//2 electrochemistry and the processes occurring during the heat treatment of the catalysts, the Case group aims to develop even more active, longer-lived catalysts. New preparative techniques which could lead to lower cost materials are also being explored.
