Abstract

Alloys containing 12 approximately 15 at% lead transform from the alpha //2(fct) phase to the alpha //1(fct) phase by an intermediate phase (m phase) on cooling. Alloys containing 30 approximately 36 at% lead transform from the beta (fcc) phase to the alpha //2(fct) phase. The mechanism is discussed in terms of the soft phonon mode. A shape memory effect is observed in the reverse transformation on heating.
