Abstract

The essay presents Unzer's elegy Vou-ti bey Tsin-nas Grabe as an early example of poetical experimentation with Chinese language and philosophy. It interprets the poem within the context of 18th century European «Chinoiseries» and the discussion of Chinese gardens as an attempt to introduce to German readers what can be considered as a unique «Chinese taste». As the essay argues, Unzer's idea was that in order to perfect our own aesthetic taste, we should take into consideration aesthetical values that are different from our own.
