Abstract

Novel AlN precursors have been prepared by reactions in a LiAlH4-CH3NH2·HCl-(CH3) 2NH·HCl system with several nominal CH3NH2·HCl:(CH3) 2NH·HCl (M:D) ratios (M:D=4:1, 6:1 and 8:1). Considerable amounts of precursors were soluble in both tetrahydrofuran and benzene. Soluble precursors consist of polymeric/oligomeric species possessing both [H2AlNMe2] and [HAlNMe] units, and ring-type (H2AlNMe2)3 was also present only if M:D=4:1. The precursors were converted into single-phase AIN with relatively high ceramic yields (up to 58 %) by pyrolysis at 1600°C under Ar.
