Abstract

Methyl, heptyl, and benzyl viologens were intercalated into the interlayer space of vanadium pentoxide gel (V2O5 · nH2O) by ion exchange. Intercalated methyl and benzyl viologens were present in monolayer arrangements in which the viologens lie parallel to the oxide layer. Heptyl viologens were intercalated in a transversal arrangement with respect to the host layer. The difference among those arrangements in the interlayer region was ascribed to the different sizes of the dications used.
