Abstract
Past high economic growth in Japan sharply increased power demands year after year. Japanese utilities therefore installed shunt capacitors (SCs) to help voltage profiles and stability meet predicted demands, but some aging SCs will soon need to be replaced. Recent large-scale introduction of Photo Voltaic (PV) systems may lead to voltage stability problems, and there are SC renewal planning problem. This paper addresses the issue of SC replacement with other voltage control equipment. In addition, economic evaluation techniques have caught the interest of power system asset managers. We propose a new fundamental renewal planning method with renewal period cost leveling using the condition age model. Simulations of the IEEJ 30-machine 115-bus system confirm the validity of the proposed method.
