Sol-gel reactions of phenyltrimethoxysilane and tetramethoxysilane. 29Si NMR analyses of reaction kinetics and polymeric intermediates

Abstract

Sol-gel reactions of phenyltetramethoxysilane in tetrahydrofuran result in complete hydrolysis before condensation becomes important. This sequence of reactions is much different from sol-gel reactions in methanol. In addition, the slow condensation of base sols is much different than in TMOS or TEOS sols, and they do not form extensive internal cage structures as observed in TMOS and TEOS reactions. Spectral evidence for bond formation between phenyltrimethoxysilane and tetramethoxysilane was obtained. Conventional prehydrolysis of the slower reacting phenyltrialkoxysilane was utilized to ensure bond formation between the two monomer.
