Abstract
The deserts have abundant solar energy and enormous land. But sand dunes and access are problem to install solar systems. We focused on a gravel desert which consists of small rocks. It is suitable for the solar system installation. The authors have developed a method to find where the gravel deserts are, and estimate total available area and potentials of photovoltaic system generations. The method utilized is remote sensing with satellite images of Landsat7 and NOAA. The algorithm of the method consists of two analyses, plus a vegetation index. In addition, we did the ground truth to compare results of estimation and the actual land condition. The percentage of suitable land in Gobi desert was 54% for the crop level and below. The total suitable area is about 760x103 km2 at the clop level and below. We evaluated the Gobi desert areas, and discovered that half of the desert area is suitable for the Very Large Scale Photovoltaic (VLS-PV) systems. It is concluded that the proposed method can provide sufficient information for the planning of VLS-PV system installations. Additionally, realistic PV resources in the Gobi desert have been identified by the algorithm, and found to be quite extensive.
