Structure of chemical vapor deposited diamond (111) surfaces by scanning tunneling microscopy

Abstract

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been employed in the observations of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) homoepitaxial diamond (111) surfaces. The surfaces are composed of an H-terminated 1 x 1 structure. Single-atom height steps on the surfaces are observed to be very straight and form a downward slope in the [112] direction. Some adsorbates different from the H-terminated monohydride structure have been found on each terrace. We speculate that these adsorbates are CH3.
