Abstract
Poly(phenylene ether)s are known as a high-performance engineering plastic having high thermal stability and chemical resistance. The polymer is depolymerizable under oxidative conditions. Water-soluble poly(phenylene ether)s were examined as novel paper binder materials having a variety of properties. Novel water-soluble poly(phenylene ether)s bearing ionic substituents were synthesized by oxidative polymerization of phenol derivatives. Characterization of the polymer revealed that it could be applied as re-usable paper binder materials.
