Abstract
Synthesis of fine TiAl-Al2Ti4C2 composites has been conducted by mechanical alloying of Ti-Al-heptane system, followed by hot compaction. The reaction forming TiC during milling is enhanced by the premilling of metal powders prior to the contact with heptane. After hot consolidation, a fine composite of TiAl and Al2Ti4C2 of an average grain size of a few hundreds nm is obtained. The effects of process parameters on the reaction and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures of the composite are described.
