Abstract

Trend of open network computing arose the demand for the standardization of Distributed Processing Environment (DPE). Telecommunications industry is also aware of the benefit of DPE in order to reduce the development cost and to provide advanced services quickly. At the user side, customer premises equipments now have significant processing power, and trend of computer-telephony integration (CTI) is progressing both at home and in offices. By integrating the telecommunications systems with home and office computers, the customers can enjoy flexible telecommunication services. DPE can provide a basic framework necessary for the integration. This paper proposes an architecture for extending telecom-DPE to home and offices, called `interpreter bridge architecture,' which enables carriers to provide flexible telecommunication services.
