Tellurite removal by marine photosynthetic bacteria

Abstract

Novel strains of purple nonsulfur bacteria, NKPB160041 and NKPB030619, which showed high-levels of resistance to tellurite were screened from 50 photosynthetic bacteria isolated from the marine environment. The MIC of tellurite for stains NKPB160041 and NKPB030619 under photoheterotrophic culture conditions was 6.0 mM and 5.0 mM, respectively. Tellurite concentration in the culture supernatant decreased to below 0.05 mM within 34 days when 0.85 mM of tellurite was added to the growth medium of strain NKPB030619. The color of the cell suspension turned black, due to the formation of intracellular deposits. These deposits were observed in both strains and confirmed as a black metallic elemental tellurium by x-ray energy-dispersive spectrogram analysis.
