Abstract
The time variation of the concentration of helium metastable atoms in He-Kr** plus discharge has been measured by the reabsorption method. The concentration of He(2s**3S) metastable atoms increases in the early afterglow and reaches the maximum about 2 mu s after the termination of the pulse. The concentration of He(2s**3S) metastable atoms is greater at the optimum pressure for the laser output power than at other investigated pressures. The concentration of He(2s**1S) metastable atoms is smaller than that of He(2s**3S) metastable atoms by the factor of about 3 to 4 during the pulse and by the factor of about 7 to 8 in the early afterglow.
