    Abstract

Experimental data on chemical composition, atomic structure and electronic structure strongly suggests that titanium oxycarbide, TiO//xC//1// minus //x, a mixed phase of TiO and TiC, is formed on the surface when a TiC (100) surface is exposed to oxygen and is then heated at approximately 1000 degree C in an ultra-high vacuum.
