Transition to turbulence in physiologically intermittent flow in an aortic arch model

Abstract

Turbulence occurred in the major arteries affects in the development of a variety of pathphysiological process. The purpose of this study is to characterize the transition process in order to understand the nature of turbulence in the aorta. The axial and secondary velocity of intermittent flow in an aortic arch model were measured by Laser Doppler Velocimeter. As a result, for η =1/2, during the deceleration, at the lower stations of 60 degrees, prominent fluctuations in the axial and secondary flow appear near the inner wall, and the turbulence propagated toward the outer wall in the diastolic period. The turbulence with shorter stationary period appears at earlier phase and nearer to the the entrance.
